Who we are...

Hi,

To say that we are the "STARFLEET Marines", having fun in the Star Trek Universe is just the beginning of the story. Many members of STARFLEET - The Star Trek Fan Association, Inc. (SFI) have felt that ground forces were implied in the Star Trek shows. Over the years we've had groups formed as both Rangers and Marines. In 1996-98 the STARFLEET Marines group in SFI began to grow quickly after our Fleet Admiral Mike Smith began wearing a STARFLEET Marine uniform to all "official" SFI activities.

Here in Region 5, the USS Kensington (a STARFLEET chapter in Boise, Idaho) became an "all Marine" chapter. Onboard the USS Destiny (in Salem, Oregon) we chartered a new Marine Strike Group in 1998, and other chapters have added "Marine groundpounders" over the years since then.

While all members of SFI are here to enjoy the fun of membership in a group of people that share having similar interests, those who like to be actively involved in projects tend to eventually join the STARFLEET Marine Corps (SFMC) and become a member of their local Marine Strike Group or Expeditionary Unit. One of the things that attracts members to the SFMC is our strong commitment to community service and social activities. This commitment is backed up by a strong program of award recognition for our members who participate. We also have the SFMC Academy, where there are courses that teach Professional Development as well as many fun specialties where members can earn special recognition such as Parachutist or Aerospace Flight Wings along with many other specialties. Participation activity is generally recognized with promotions in rank, but this rank is not "real world" authority to tell any other member what to do. Rank and service ribbons indicate a level of respect earned by a member through their participation in this organization.

We look forward to hearing from any of y0u that are interested in joining SFI, and becoming a Marine in the SFMC. Many of our members have served in the armed forces of their country, but that is not a requirement to join the SFMC.

In service and in friendship,

Norm
